#LIFF2017 Extra Film: Mostly really great but loses it's way towards the end.
This was shown at #LIFF2017 as part of Day Of The Dead and one of the films I would've seen but I couldn't fit it in so I watched it on Netflix on one of my mornings off.

#LIFF2017 Film 24: I've always been a fan of the 'night gone wrong' sub-genre and things go really wrong here. The coda seemed unnecessary but then a couple of lines as the credits were rolling nearly floored me. Fantastic soundtrack, amazing performances and much more than just a good time.

#LIFF2017 Film 19: The fantastic live multi instrument soundtrack from Christine Ott was completely mesmerising. The only problem with this was that I kept getting distracted from the film to watch her perform.

#LIFF2017 Film 18: A great live score (one of Jonathan Best's, erm, best) but the film seemed more academic than enjoyable. Amazing editing and snapshots of life which (like the Leeds On Film event last week) made me wonder how our own lives will look like in the decades to come.

#LIFF2017 Film 17: Every festival there seems to be a film that I know nothing about, end up really enjoying but can't really explain why. Western was this kind of film. Slow in a good way, unexciting but never dull and really just a pleasure to spend time in this community.
Would have benefited from using different subtitles for the different languages.

#LIFF2017 Film 16: A dramatic live organ score added a lot to an already great film. I thought I'd seen it relatively recently (turns out it was 5 years ago) but still couldn't see where it was going.

#LIFF2017 Film 15: The perfect mix of reality, dreams and craziness, edited in such a way that you're never entirely convinced which is which. This confusion only adds to the story and even though I was sure I had seen the film before (now I'm not convinced) I was still constantly surprised.

#LIFF2017 Film 12: Stunning animation with an epic feel but a muddled story that I couldn't quite follow. I don't know if that was because I missed something or it just wasn't told that well.
There were a few dodgy looking CGI scenes which I later realised were for the 3D version - just stop ruining films with this 3D nonsense.

#LIFF2017 Film 10: A great ending with a diminished impact because of excessive running time. It may be the festival effect of watching too many films that I also had with Carol (and wouldn't be the only thing these films have in common) so it's perhaps one I need to watch again.

#LIFF2017 Film 9: I joked that this was less tedious than I was expecting but that does just about sum it up. With the opening scenes I was concerned that this was going to be hard work but it settled into what somebody else called a Haneke's greatest hits and I was mostly okay with that.

#LIFF2017 Film 8: Confession time, I was only seeing this because I couldn't be bothered to change festival venues. I didn't know anything about it going in and it's fair to say it didn't grab my attention. It felt like it was a film that was important at the time and has a surprising amount of relevance today. But it also felt very procedural and more like it would be better suited to a TV series.

#LIFF2017 Film 6: It's such a delightful feeling when a film you think you love but haven't actually seen for years turns out to be just as good, if not better, than you remembered. I'd completely forgotten about the Diana stuff which is strange because I thought the film existed in a timeless works like Jeunet's other earlier films.

Thelma, 2017 - ★★★★
#LIFF2017 Film 5: My favourite film of the festival so far. By relying more on its human side than the supernatural Thelma manages to deliver a strange dark coming of age story. I found it much more satisfying than The Killing Of A Sacred Deer (also at LIFF), The Fits and Raw all of which contain similar themes.
Eili Hathor's performance as Thelma is incredibly good.

#LIFF2017 Film 4: This didn't work for me, the pacing was off, it felt like it was trying too hard and in the end I found that I just didn't care about the outcome of all that spinning. Maybe I just didn't understand it but it all felt a bit pointless which I didn't think was the case with Dogtooth or The Lobster.

#LIFF2017 Film 3: A good film rather than a great one. I was trying to remember if I had only ever seen this once before because it all feels so familiar. I realised it's because of all the parodies, sequels and everything else it went on to inspire.
