You are right but there's something about how Perlman is made to play Hellboy that has me ever so excited about the follow up.

Hopefully the sequel will be much better. I have no idea what the comics are like but I liked the set up. The director is capable of much greater things (Pan's Labyrinth, The Devil's Backbone).
