#LIFF2017 Film 16: A dramatic live organ score added a lot to an already great film. I thought I'd seen it relatively recently (turns out it was 5 years ago) but still couldn't see where it was going.

Perfect Blue, 1997 - ★★★★
#LIFF2017 Film 15: The perfect mix of reality, dreams and craziness, edited in such a way that you're never entirely convinced which is which. This confusion only adds to the story and even though I was sure I had seen the film before (now I'm not convinced) I was still constantly surprised.
November 05, 2017 at 11:29PMMutafukaz, 2017 - ★★★★
#LIFF2017 Film 14: Not quite as crazy as I was expecting but still a whole lot of fun.
November 05, 2017 at 11:20PMThe Breadwinner, 2017 - ★★★★
#LIFF2017 Film 13: Closest I've come to giving a new film a 5 star rating. Beautiful story, beautiful animation, completely engaging from start to finish.
November 05, 2017 at 11:03PMBig Fish & Begonia, 2016 - ★★★½
#LIFF2017 Film 12: Stunning animation with an epic feel but a muddled story that I couldn't quite follow. I don't know if that was because I missed something or it just wasn't told that well.
There were a few dodgy looking CGI scenes which I later realised were for the 3D version - just stop ruining films with this 3D nonsense.
November 05, 2017 at 11:00PMLu Over The Wall, 2017 - ★★★★
#LIFF2017 Film 11: Charming boy meets mermaid which looks fantastic, manages to be funny, adorable and just a little bit crazy.
Mer-doggie!
November 05, 2017 at 10:56PMCall Me by Your Name, 2017 - ★★★★
#LIFF2017 Film 10: A great ending with a diminished impact because of excessive running time. It may be the festival effect of watching too many films that I also had with Carol (and wouldn't be the only thing these films have in common) so it's perhaps one I need to watch again.
November 05, 2017 at 12:34AMHappy End, 2017 - ★★★½
#LIFF2017 Film 9: I joked that this was less tedious than I was expecting but that does just about sum it up. With the opening scenes I was concerned that this was going to be hard work but it settled into what somebody else called a Haneke's greatest hits and I was mostly okay with that.
November 05, 2017 at 12:22AMInvestigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion, 1970 - ★★★
#LIFF2017 Film 8: Confession time, I was only seeing this because I couldn't be bothered to change festival venues. I didn't know anything about it going in and it's fair to say it didn't grab my attention. It felt like it was a film that was important at the time and has a surprising amount of relevance today. But it also felt very procedural and more like it would be better suited to a TV series.
November 05, 2017 at 12:10AMThe Big Bad Fox and Other Tales, 2017 - ★★★★
#LIFF2017 Film 7: A charming animation which left me wanting more and made a great double bill with Amélie.
November 04, 2017 at 11:58PM04 November 2017
Amélie, 2001 - ★★★★★
#LIFF2017 Film 6: It's such a delightful feeling when a film you think you love but haven't actually seen for years turns out to be just as good, if not better, than you remembered. I'd completely forgotten about the Diana stuff which is strange because I thought the film existed in a timeless works like Jeunet's other earlier films.
November 04, 2017 at 11:56PMMy #LIFF2017 Shorts
Some of the short films I saw at LIFF2017. I originally had these in my main list but it was getting too cluttered.
Other shorts not on Letterboxd:
Mum
Stan
Thirsty
Burn Bridge
Toll Booth
Hidden Peple
Lambing Season

Thelma, 2017 - ★★★★
#LIFF2017 Film 5: My favourite film of the festival so far. By relying more on its human side than the supernatural Thelma manages to deliver a strange dark coming of age story. I found it much more satisfying than The Killing Of A Sacred Deer (also at LIFF), The Fits and Raw all of which contain similar themes.
Eili Hathor's performance as Thelma is incredibly good.
November 03, 2017 at 08:56PMThe Killing of a Sacred Deer, 2017 - ★★★
#LIFF2017 Film 4: This didn't work for me, the pacing was off, it felt like it was trying too hard and in the end I found that I just didn't care about the outcome of all that spinning. Maybe I just didn't understand it but it all felt a bit pointless which I didn't think was the case with Dogtooth or The Lobster.
November 03, 2017 at 12:07AMThe Silence of the Lambs, 1991 - ★★★★
#LIFF2017 Film 3: A good film rather than a great one. I was trying to remember if I had only ever seen this once before because it all feels so familiar. I realised it's because of all the parodies, sequels and everything else it went on to inspire.
November 03, 2017 at 12:01AM02 November 2017
The Cakemaker, 2017 - ★★★★
#LIFF2017 Film 2: A tasty treat with more than enough charm to gloss over the more unbelievable parts. If I did have a problem it was that Thomas comes across far too creepy that I expected it was going to turn into a thriller and I don't think this was at all the intention.
November 02, 2017 at 11:54PM01 November 2017
The Square, 2017 - ★★★½
#LIFF2017 Film 1: If Östlund's previous films were anything to go by then part of the delight of his work is never being entirely certain how a scene is going to unfold and on that front The Square didn't disapoint. In a different frame of mind I think I could have enjoyed this a lot more. Even without my real life worries (ironically trust related) distracting me this was too long with the ending in particular dragging on. The moments that really work manage to be surprising, funny, disturbing and absurd and sometimes a combination of all of those things and for that The Square is worth watching.

The films I saw at the Leeds International Film Festival 2017 in order of 'something positive'.

Hocus Pocus, 1993 - ★★★
Over the last few years I've noticed more and more people mentioning this film, especially around this time of year. I'd always dismissed it as an insignificant family-friendly film but thought it was worth checking out. It turns out my original opinion was correct, there isn't anything particular bad about the film but there's nothing special either. I suspect it is a film that means more to people who saw it at a certain point in their lives.
October 29, 2017 at 10:24PMArmy of Darkness, 1992 - ★★★
My first viewing of the third part and a little surprised to find it's a different kind of film. More of an action comedy than straight out horror but still lots of fun.
October 29, 2017 at 10:19PMEvil Dead II, 1987 - ★★★★
Last time I watched the Evil Dead films I preferred the first which is obviously the wrong opinion. I now realise that this is a much better film, building on the ideas of the first to realise them in a much better way.
October 29, 2017 at 10:17PMYoung Frankenstein, 1974 - ★★★★
A classic but a classic I wish was just a bit better.
October 29, 2017 at 10:13PMThe Evil Dead, 1981 - ★★★
I came to The Evil Dead late so it's never been anything special for me. It's still a film I admire and enjoy but it does feel like I've seen it all before now (which I literally have).
October 29, 2017 at 10:08PMThor: Ragnarok, 2017 - ★★★★½
The new Taika Waititi film doesn't disapoint, he handles the bigger budget and scale with aplomb to deliver a wonderfully entertaining fun cinematic experience. I'm not entirely sure how well this Thor fits into the rest of the MCU but that's perhaps because up until now he's been the least memorable Avenger and now he may be my favourite.
Was there anything wrong with this? It's incredibly funny, feels fresh and has a fantastic soundtrack. I did have a problem with the 3D which is a shame but not the fault of the film. There are hardly any 3D effects and the rest of the film suffered badly from ghosting beyond the point of distraction. I thought the 3D fad was dying out but unfortunately there were no 2D Imax showings.
But yeah, this was fun.
